More Information

The Yellow Wallpaper of Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a short literary work. But it regards many hot-button issues through the story of a woman’s descent into psychosis. The main character sticks to rest cure with her family in the countryside. Her husband’s name is John, and he is her doctor at this tough time. Her madness’ background is the obsession with the yellow wallpaper in the bedroom.

By the fourth of July, the narrator almost becomes insane due to the object of her obsession. She does not fall asleep during the entire night as she stares at it. The main character believes that the wallpaper is going to become alive. She also thinks that the patterns are going to change and move. Besides, she feels that there is a woman inside the wallpaper. The woman is “stooping down and creeping” behind the pattern. The images in her head become worse and worse. She can’t free herself from them. The narrator confesses to her husband that the object of her obsession is growing on her. John is appalled, as this fact implies the deterioration of the wife’s condition.
