To a certain extent, the wind does contribute to soil erosion, especially in dry, arid regions, devoid of rainfalls except for occasional cloudbursts. Erosion is said to be a condition whereby rocks and other materials on the surface of the Earth get disintegrated and fragmented due to a variety of reasons. This is more pronounced in areas where the rocks are loosened, thereby accelerating the process of erosion.

In sandy and desert areas, sand gets blown around by strong winds, and softer layers of rock formations undergo erosion faster than harder ones. Besides having just sparse plants to hold the soil together or water that could bind to the soil firmly, wind erosion is more pronounced in such regions. Besides, the impact of wind erosion, seen more in arid, desert areas, could result in soil degradation and in loss of agricultural produce.

The statement that winds have sculpted the landscape is based on an ill-founded premise that dispersed sand particles cling to rocks formations and may alter their outer structures over a period of time. But rainfall could wipe out these traces of sand formations in rocks and cleanse them back to their original forms and structures. Powerful winds and sandstorms are capable of carrying dust and sandstones over wide areas, but their effects could be substantially reduced by snow and regular rainfalls.
