The Variety of Varieties of English One Encounter

Discuss the various varieties of English you encounter in your everyday life.

Who speaks English in a rather different way? A colleague? A shop-keeper? A teacher? Listen actively and jot down any examples you hear or remember of colorful idioms, slang, individual words, and borrowings from other languages. You are perfectly free to give a detailed discussion of only one variety of English if you so wish.

You may even use American English or British English as you hear them on TV and in films, although you almost certainly do better discussing a variety of English that is more familiar. The idea is that this should be fun and interesting for you. The use of phonetic symbols or being highly scientific is not expected. However, you do need to show that you are sensitive and observant and that you can describe, in everyday English, the differences you hear in the speech around you.
