There exists validity to the under-counting of the audience from Nielsen’s metrics, and this has some pros and cons. The main advantage that the under-counting has on both Nielsen and the Video Advertising Bureau is that it makes them agree that COVID-19 has posed some challenges to television viewership. Another benefit that can be deduced from under-counting is that it exposed a video-on-demand (VOD) as a growing business opportunity for the major TV networks.

Nonetheless, under-counting has its share of disadvantages, especially for television networks. Chiefly, the results about audience declines by Nielsen do not reflect other data on viewership trends in the year between 2020 and 2021. Secondly, undercounting does not give proper clarity between the actual audience declines and the estimated figures. As evident, the COVID-19 pandemic affected Nielsen and the TV networks in a drastic way.
