Sublime experience is always controversial: a person comes into contact with something equally beautiful and scary. The woman in “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” is so beautiful that it is intimidating. Besides, it is not clear where she comes from – after all, not a lot of women live alone in caves. The knight must have known that there was something supernatural about the female character. He felt a mix of curiosity, lust, attraction, uncertainty, and fear – and that is what makes what he lived through sublime.
