The question “What is this story really about” is connected to the one that asks, “What is at stake here?” In order to find out what is at stake in “Sheep” by Thomas H. McNeely, consider the struggle going on inside Lloyd; consider what Schwartz wants; consider what Sheriff Lynch wants. Do any of them get what they want?

To understand what is at stake in this story, one has to consider different strategies and struggles pursued by the main characters: Lloyd, Schwartz, and Sheriff Lynch.

As it was noted above, Lloyd cannot remember the serial murderer, and that makes him feel really bad because he cannot find real clues for defining whether he is guilty or not. All he believes is that the evidence that was gathered is sufficient for proving his guilt. Besides this, he sees that Sheriff Lynch, who has known him for many years and calls him son, believes in facts: the knife which was used to murder the girl belongs to Lloyd.

Sheriff position has a significant influence on that of Lloyd. Sheriff experiences a strong psychological blow because it turns out that he does not know such close people as Lloyd. This deeply changes his vision of life and the world. He persuades Lloyd that the only way is ‘to get right with yourself and to be a man,’ which means taking responsibility for the crime committed. Lloyd, who respects Sheriff Lynch, understands that it is the only way left for him.

Unlike these two characters Schwartz, who is Lloyd’s advocate, has a more professional stance over the matter. He pays specific attention to finding out real facts of the crime and does not believe in abstract generalization about Lloyd’s guilt. He forces Lloyd to pass different psychological tests, asks about his relations with Sheriff, etc. This greatly annoys Lloyd, who thinks that Schwartz wants to harm him, unlike Sheriff.
