The presence of others can sometimes benefit our performance and other times inhibit our performance. Explain what factors determine when the presence of others (e.g., an audience, team) will improve performance versus interfere with it. Provide a specific example as part of your response.

The presence of others can either benefit or inhibit one’s performance. Group effort, throughout the history of humankind, has proven itself to be more efficient, as individuals may benefit from the expertise, companionship, and extra labor provided by other members of the group.

An example of such would be construction – instead of having to haul heavy loads on their own and be proficient in all trades related to the process, a member can specialize and excel in one particular area (bricklaying, plumbing, etc.), while leaving the rest to other members.

At the same time, where a specific task requires only one person to perform, the presence of a team or an audience would be detrimental. When a person is fixing a broken clock and working with small components, other people staring over their shoulder or offering advice may prove to be a distraction, thus resulting in unnecessary interference.
