The issues of poor leadership obviously surface in civilian life. Under what circumstances would you feel justified in reporting your superior for providing unsafe care?

Leadership is among the nine characteristics critical to the success of a clinical microsystem. It also has an influence on other factors impacting safety, such as patient focus, culture, and staff focus. Therefore, when a leader does not exhibit the behaviors and attitudes necessary for promoting high-quality, safe care, it may have an adverse impact on patient safety. In cases when leaders themselves provide unsafe care, the staff should report them immediately to protect patients. Personally, I would feel justified in reporting my superior for providing unsafe care when their behaviors constitute a violation from an objective viewpoint. For example, if they go against hospital procedures and regulations, thus putting patients at risk, I would report them immediately. Additionally, I would feel justified telling on my superior if their actions caused harm to the patient, regardless of whether or not there was a violation. In cases where no harm came to the patient and my superior did not go against any official rules or policies, I would not feel comfortable reporting them for unsafe care.
