The fight or flight response, or acute stress response, entails the bodily reaction to a frightening or traumatic occurrence involving the flow of stress hormones produced by the body through well-orchestrated biological changes. An instance of a threatening situation would be encountering a wild dog along the jogging track early in the morning while exercising. On encountering the wild dog, the body’s sympathetic nervous system unexpectedly releases hormones, which is the first instance of activating the fight or flight response. Thereafter, the adrenal glands are roused, prompting the discharge of catecholamine, consisting of both noradrenaline and adrenaline. In the end, the chain of reactions causes increased heartbeat, breathing rate, and blood pressure. It may take 20 to 60 minutes for the body to adjust back to the pre-arousal state once the threat is handled.

The major purpose of the fight or flight response is to prepare a person to counter emerging stress or danger. It is a survival mechanism that empowers people to counter life-threatening occurrences. As soon as a person feels threatened, the response prepares the body to either combat the threat or run away. Once the body is prepared to respond, it becomes easy for a person to act under the threat or pressure of the moment. It ensures that a person is more likely to efficiently muddle through the threat. The fight or flight response happens automatically, making it very difficult for human beings to control the response on purpose.
