The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s was a major turning point in the American history as it allowed putting an end to the drastic violation of rights of Afro-Americans. There were numerous examples of non-violent civil disobedience that showed the peaceful protest of black people. Thus, inspired by the first successes of the movement, black students in Greensboro, North Carolina, staged a massive “sit-in” in 1960: they came to a cafe for whites, and refused to leave it.

It turned out that white racists had nothing to oppose to such nonviolent methods of struggle except rage and violence. This, in its turn, led to a powerful sympathy for the protesters, who quickly turned into all-American heroes. In 1963, Martin Luther King led a march of thousands to Washington, culminating in a mass rally at the Lincoln Memorial and King’s speech “I have a Dream”. The logical outcome of the first phase of the Civil Rights Movement was the adoption of two laws passed on the initiative of the Lyndon Johnson administration in 1964 and 1965 (Levy, 2019). These laws essentially ‘breathed new life’ into the 14th and 15th amendments to the US Constitution, confirming the need to respect civil and electoral rights regardless of race.
