In the XIXth century, women were consideredinferior to men biologically, which was evident from the laws and the societal norms. Women were unable to vote, could not own property, and had no control over finances. Furthermore, they were denied higher education and expected to fill specific roles in society – those of a wife and a mother. Amid the abolitionist movement, women were presented with the reality of their slave-Esque status in society, where they were not taken seriously or respected as individuals independent from men. Their whole lives,they were accessories to first their fathers and then their husbands, more resembling property than human beings. Therefore, by 1848, women had understandably had enough of the unfair treatment that they received on a daily basis and should have liked to declare their independence from men.
