Wheatley combines the themes of blackness and Christianity in the poem “On Being Brought from Africa to America.” The poet describes the journey toward discovering Christianity and learning about God. She assumes that black people, believed to be cursed as Cain by some readers of the Bible, can be saved.

This poem reads as a message to Christians who think that black people do not deserve salvation. In the seventh line, she writes, “Remember, Christians,” as if pointing out their flawed opinions about black people and their reading of the Bible. This poem is short, but it can be important for many Christians. The author puts the history of Christianity into a new perspective for many of its followers.
