Summarise one of the following classic social psychological studies: a. Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment; b. Latané & Darley’s ‘smoke-filled room’ bystander studies; c. Triplett’s competition studies.

The influence of personalities and situations on individuals’ behavior was the motivation behind Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment. In a simulated prison environment, Dr. Zimbardo tested the impact of the prison environment on the physical expressions of guards and prisoners and found that each adapted to the environment, behaving as they would in actual detention.

The guards harassed the prisoners, and the latter developed emotional behavior typical of an actual prison experience. In this experiment, Dr. Zimbardo realized that situations had a more significant impact on behavior than personalities.
