“Students must therefore work without any wish to gain good marks, to pass examinations, to win school successes; without any reference to their natural abilities and tastes: applying themselves equally to all their tasks, with the idea that each one will help to form in them the habit of that attention which is the substance of prayer. When we set out to do a piece of work, it is necessary to wish to do it correctly, because such a wish is indispensable if there is to be true effort.” Summarize the main point of this quotation in 1 sentence. Do you agree or disagree with this quotation? Explain why. How might you use this quotation to help you flourish in Math 102? Explain the relationship (similarities and differences) between this quotation and Philippians 3:14.

The main aspiration of students should not be the desire to succeed without taking into account their abilities, but the desire to do everything right and make the necessary efforts at the same time.

I agree with the statement that when a person is going to perform an action, he or she should first all want to do it right. This is due to the fact that it is this kind of desire that motivates the application of real efforts. I believe that it is the inner desire that motivates a person to accomplish those things that will leave the best imprint on him or her. Therefore, for example, if an individual really wants to learn a particular subject, he or she will not only succeed and pass the test but also remember important information. Thus, motivation is an internal impulse that drives people to action and helps them to finish what they started. It is at the heart of almost any action and promotes and directs this action. In particular, it should be noted that without motivation, there is no action itself.

I believe that such a position can be of considerable help to me in such a subject as Mathematics 102. This is due to the fact that this subject can cause some difficulties and is not easy for all students. If there is no motivation, everything seems painful: the math lesson becomes tedious and endless, and daily homework turns into torture. I think that in overcoming such difficulties as exact sciences, one’s own desire to study as best as possible and make maximum efforts plays the most important role. Especially my inner desire to overcome difficulties and strive to do everything right is influenced by the situation when solving some task. I do not have full confidence in whether I can do it or not. And if I manage to solve it successfully, I feel a sense of success and satisfaction, which also affects the highest level of motivation.

Moreover, I believe that self-belief is faith in God, who is inside every person. Faith is the main driving force that helps to cope with any difficulties of life. Thus, with confidence in the correctness of their actions and due diligence, people can achieve significant results. This is much better than just wanting to achieve a short-term measurable result that will not leave any significant imprint on a person’s memory and soul.

The main similarity of these two statements is the message that inner desire is the main component of human activity. The difference is that the first statement focuses more on how the motivation of a person helps to achieve better results. Philippians 3:14, in turn, focuses its attention on the fact that no matter what difficult task people face, they must learn to move forward no matter what. Moreover, it emphasizes that a person should constantly strive for the desired goal.
