Socrates, a prominent philosopher of Ancient Greece, once said that “an unexamined life is not worth living”. In the context of education, this approach implies that the true purpose of studies is to promote self-examination through the development of relevant skills. I am inclined to agree with the profound message conveyed by Socrates’ quote. On the surface, schools and universities may simply seem to deliver knowledge that can be used in future professions. However, this knowledge cannot be properly utilized without an adequate level of critical thinking. While the origins of the idea are several millennia old, this skill has acquired particular importance at present.

With the amounts of information available today, it is essential to be able to process and analyze it correctly. Doubleday and Strotman state that critical thinking and self-reflection skills help students analyze their knowledge and performance, forming relevant competencies both within and outside classrooms. Radulović and Stančić add that the absence of such skills entails decontextualized learning, after which the knowledge cannot be applied fully and precisely. Thus, an unexamined life is associated with an array of difficulties that should be prevented by nurturing self-reflection and critical thinking at school.
