The dot-com-boom and burst of the late 1990s and early 2000s should have been expected due to the rapid growth in information technology by the mid-1990s. In 1993, the World Wide Web had been created. The development and growth of the World Wide Web led to the formation of many companies dealing with the internet or basing their operations on the internet. Many companies enjoyed buoyed growth due to venture investors pouring their money into dot-com business; in lieu of perceived prospects and profits in e-commerce. However, due to government controls, e.g., an increase in rates on the internet, a number of dot-com businesses pulled out, thus causing the burst.
