Review the stages of pre-linguistic development. Define and give examples of: cooing, babbling, holophrastic (syncretic) speech, telegraphic speech.

Cooing is a vocal technique used by babies to express happiness. Babies usually make sounds such as ‘ah-ah’, ‘ahaaaa’, ‘oh-oh’, and others. These sounds typically include vowels. Babbling is referred to as the imitation of consonant vowels. Most of the time these sounds are confused with the first word. ‘Ma-ma-ma-ma’ and ‘ba-ba-ba-ba’ are understood as examples of bubbling.

Later the child develops holographic speech, where the invented words have a certain meaning. For example, the word ‘da’ might mean ‘give it to me’ or ‘na’ means ‘take it’. Telegraphic speech is another important stage, as a child puts two words together in one sentence. ‘Da evs’ might have the meaning ‘dad leaves to work’. At this stage, the child pronounces the words, how he or she hears them.
