Research shows that most forms of risky behavior reach their peak during adolescence, resulting in adolescent mortality rates being 2-3 times greater than childhood rates. Discuss why adolescent decision-making is still less effective than adults. How the differential timing of maturation of prefrontal cortical and limbic brain areas and the different functions of the “networks” that are formed in the brain explain why this may be. Also, create one policy you would put in place to help keep adolescents safer from harm during this time of development while still allowing them some autonomy.

Adolescents make decisions less efficiently than adults. First, the explanation for this is a little experience and insufficient knowledge in order to assess the situation and make the right decision correctly. Also, adolescents perceive risky behaviors without negative consequences inadequately, which leads to additional risk. Second, adolescents need adult supervision and protection to make the right decisions.

Firstly, the different maturation times of the prefrontal cortical and limbic regions of the brain also explain why decision-making in adolescents is less effective. It is important to note that the cortical areas with the most extended developmental period are the frontal lobes. Consequently, the prefrontal cortex is responsible for complex thinking, especially decision making, information and memory integration, reasoning, and impulse suppression. Disruption of brain networks affects the impairment of social skills. Secondly, during school years, the prefrontal cortex of adolescents continuously develops and increases its connections with more distant parts of the brain. As a result of the development of networks between the prefrontal cortex and other brain parts, adolescents use the acquired experience to learn new things and improve their decision-making process.

To keep children from harm and dangerous situations, I would introduce a policy to help to keep adolescents safer from damage during this development time. Hence, children must go to children’s clubs of their choice, considering their autonomy. Playing sports, drawing, dancing, or playing chess will help children focus on their personal and social development and reduce the waste of time that can lead to risky situations. Consequently, it is also essential that children return home before 10 pm and warn their parents about their location. To sum up, parental control and protection are critical during adolescent development.
