Reliability and Validity in Relationships Using Hendrick’s Scale

Analyze reliability and validity using Susan Hendrick’s (1988) development of the Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS).

The Relationship Assessment Scale is a self-report assessment that purports to measure satisfaction in romantic relationships. Here are the seven items included on the RAS, each of which is answered on a 5-point Likert scale:

  • How well does your partner meet your needs?
  • In general, how satisfied are you with your relationship?
  • How good is your relationship compared to most?
  • How often do you wish you hadn’t gotten into this relationship?
  • To what extent has your relationship met your original expectations?
  • How much do you love your partner?
  • How many problems are there in your relationship?
