Setting the right tone is essential to the educational process, as a positive tone can influence the students’ motivation to participate in class. In my class, I will set a positive tone from the beginning to encourage students’ academic achievements. According to A. Alstot and C. Alstot, students often learn by imitating the teacher, and therefore teachers can set the tone of the class by modeling professional and responsible behavior.
The authors also suggest that while children reflect their parents’ behavior, students tend to reflect their teacher’s behavior. I plan to model a respectful attitude towards the students and give them a place to provide input in acknowledging the importance of concentration for an easier learning process. By doing that, I will ensure that students will act more respectfully towards the speakers, including other students, when they are presenting in front of the class.
Furthermore, I will reinforce the students’ positive attitude by helping the volunteering students summarize the covered material at the end of the class to encourage initiative and promote the development of active listening skills.
