Read Theodore Adorno’s influential essay, “On Popular Music”. How does Adorno define popular music? What about it make it different from what he calls “serious music”? What are the concepts he describes as “standardization” and “pseudo-individualization”, and how do they relate to the “industry” model of popular music that we have been discussing in class? In what ways do these ideas apply to the popular music that is made today, or that you might listen to? In what ways does it not apply? Adorno’s accuses popular music of having certain potentially dangerous effects on society. Do you agree with his points? Why or why not?

Adorno defines popular music as the standardization of lyrics to create a typical pattern. The author condemns the standardization and interchangeability of musical beats in popular songs, making the music meaningless. Popular songs usually contain repetitive phrases or words, making most songs content.

Adorno differentiates popular music from serious music by suggesting that popular songs usually lack meaning or attempt to send a message in the chorus. However, other verses are for rhyming purposes more than making sense. On the other hand, serious music sends a fundamental message to the audience, and all verses, including the chorus, contain significant messages in people’s lives.

According to Adorno, the concepts of standardization and pseudo-individualization include creating music that captures the audience. As a result, these songs are unchallenging and unnatural since they follow a standard pattern that is familiar to the listener.

Although popular music has evolved, the author’s arguments from 1993 still stand because the songs are still atypical of standard rules and have become more predictable due to the patterns and interchangeable beats that define pop culture. Standardizing the music gives the genre distinct features from other music, but the songs should make sense through repetition and beats.

Adorno classified music listeners as entertainment and emotional audience who have different expectations of a song’s content and beat. Based on the two categories, popular music caters to entertainment, a short-term stimulation and distraction that complements their lives.

The author correctly accuses popular music of affecting the society negatively. Standardizing the songs leads to uncertainty, dullness, and meaningless phrases that repeat in a song. Nowadays, some popular music combines street words to create a song where the chorus is the only eloquently verbal verse with meaning.

I agree with the author’s argument that popular music makes little sense and repetition creates monotony. Although listening to the repeating beats is enjoyable at times as one feels the music with rhyming codes, as an emotional listener, I find the songs unappealing due to the lack of content intended and the seriousness of the music.

Listeners can get addicted to the song’s structure and lead similar repetitive, dull lives characterized by short-term goals since the songs portray the same characteristics.
