Read “The Tragedy of Great Power Politics” by John Mearsheimer. What are the strategies for survival? What are the key goals of these strategies?

In the international arena, states are in constant interaction with each other, and each may have interests in conquering others’ resources, influence, and lands. In fact, this creates a need for states to survive in an environment of external pressure. Survival strategies, then, are any formed visions of how states can act to preserve their sovereignty. Such strategies include an aggressive approach and the pursuit of diplomatic dialogue.

For example, when a state uses military force to intimidate other states or engages in physical or informational warfare, these are examples of an aggressive approach. Alternatively, a state can survive through effective communication and the construction of dialogue with other countries through international conferences, conventions, and pacts. In the case of each strategy, the main goal always remains the same: to protect the internal power of the country and to stimulate the development of the state.
