For a state, the retention of sovereign authority is a critical element for maintaining independence and autonomous functionality. Protecting the integrity of that authority not only from external enemies but also from internal ones is the army’s primary task. In this context, I agree with Mearsheimer, who pointed to the primacy of the army in protecting land power. However, it is possible to assess this statement from another perspective: according to Mearsheimer, “armies are the central ingredient of military power.”

This is because armies allow fear to be instilled through the threat of physical force; it is this fear that is the most critical predictor of respect for power. Enemies, competitors, and opponents will be afraid to speak openly against power structures if the national army is characterized by strength, imposing power, and confidence. Thus, I agree with Mearsheimer’s assertion and indeed believe that armies are an essential component of the integrity of sovereign power in a country.
