Read “The Good, the Bad, and the Phony: Six Famous Historians and Their Critics.” What are the major errors assessed by the critics of these famous historians? How did they violate certain ethical standards of history as a discipline, specifically regarding documentation? Explain how the charges of plagiarism might have been avoided through adherence to the complex requirements of source credit and through more careful research methods.

The major errors assessed by the critics in the famous historians involve the issues of plagiarism, fabrication, incompetence, and shallowness. Each of the six distinguished connoisseurs who had relished readers’ and scholars’ appreciation for decades made some unforgivable mistakes that could not be easily forgotten in the academic world. For instance, McCullough attributed words to Thomas Jefferson that, in fact, had never been uttered by the President. Beschloss, in his turn, was accused of a more entertaining than scholarly approach to writing books on history. Goodwin and Ambrose were found guilty of plagiarism, and Ellis and Morris were regarded as deceivers. The charges of plagiarism might have been avoided if the mentioned authors had adhered to the complex requirements of source credit. Particularly, they should have either quoted the phrases they wanted to use in their books or paraphrased them much better. In any of the cases, they should have mentioned the original source and its authorship.
