The storms in Genesis and The Epic of Gilgamesh are definitely distinct, yet they are strikingly comparable. The main events that occur in the tales are identical, yet the minor aspects of them and how they are followed out change. In both cases, the Flood was dispatched to kill out all people. Both floods, however, may be seen as emblems of rebirth or a fresh beginning in what God and the deities saw as a collapsing world.

Because of man’s depravity, God unleashed the Flood in Genesis to wipe out humanity. Unlike in Gilgamesh, where the purpose was never revealed, the Flood was sent by a remote assembly of deities. Enlil, the God of the Earth, Wind, and Air, proposed the notion.
