Read Petals on the Wind by V. C. Andrews. Dr. Paul reveals to Catherine that his ex-wife murdered their small child. What is the significance of this story and how does it apply to the theme of revenge? Where is revenge evident in the main characters and now that Dr. Paul has a past as well as the Dollanganger children how does this bring them together or tear them apart?

Dr. Paul’s revelation about his wife Julia murdering their son, Scotty, demonstrates Julia’s bitterness after feeling betrayed by Dr. Paul’s affair. This animosity overwhelmed her and resulted in vengeance.

The story presents the theme of revenge because Julia killed Scotty to hurt Dr. Paul. She knew how much Dr. Paul loved Scotty, and therefore killing him would be enough punishment for betraying her. Despite loving Scotty, Julia’s urge for retribution makes her kill him.

The theme of revenge is prominent in the story, as demonstrated by the main characters. For instance, Cathy is bitter that her mother killed Cory by poisoning him. She develops hostility that accumulates into vengeance, making her determined to punish her mother.

She says, “I cried more for Cory who was like my own child. And that’s when I stopped crying and turned to bitter, hard thoughts of revenge.” Catherine vows never to forgive her mother for the atrocities she subjected them to.

She says, “I would never, never forget or forgive… she was going to hurt ten times more than we had.” In another instance, Dr. Paul’s receptionist reveals to his wife that she is pregnant by Dr. Paul after he failed to take responsibility for the pregnancy.

The somber past that Dr. Paul and the Dollanganger children share brings them together by making them comfort each other from the pain that they carry from their past. For instance, Dr. Paul shares his story with Cathy to help her overcome the revenge she has for her mother.

On the other hand, Cathy calms Dr. Paul by promising to marry him so that he can recover from the grief of losing his wife and son. The past of the Dollanganger children allows Dr. Paul to care for them like they were his children by sending them to school and sheltering them.
