The cause of Lauren’s “hyper-empathy” lies in the fact that her mother was addicted to Paracecto; hyper-empathy allows Lauren to feel other people’s pain physically. Perhaps due to this ability, Lauren is different from others in her ideas and hopes. The author shows that humanity is not lost while compassionate people live among others. The space program is linked to Lauren’s desire to organize a community on other planets to get away from the cruelty of the world she lives in.
