Read “On Seeing England for the First Time” by Jamaica Kincaid and “The Sasquatch at home,” “Traditional protocols and modern storytelling” by Eden Robinson. What arguments do writers have?

The writers do not just talk about the influence of foreign culture on the lives of their heroines but also argue for each of their positions. For example, in Robinson’s essay, phrases such as “everyone knows Elvis Presley,” and “everyone wants to get there” are used, telling the reader that foreign culture lives on in the lives of each person in the story. In “On Seeing England for the First Time,” the writer talks about schools where every child is taught all the facts about England more than any other school subject, idealizing this state and setting it as a benchmark in every area of life.

The reader may also notice this phenomenon, the argument being that each of the heroines in both works gives a special and unique meaning to what is going on. One girl’s mother wants to experience the emotions and feelings of a foreign club more strongly than anything else, so much so that she asks to spend the money her daughter won to travel for the concert. Another character makes it her life’s goal to visit another country and tries to do everything she can to make that dream come true. These two facts strengthen the argument that English culture has played such a massive role in people’s lives that they become obsessed.
