Professionals need to learn about the cultural heritage and historical backgrounds of their diverse clientele, so their preconceptions do not lead to unconsciously differential attitudes or harmful treatment models. They need to use their knowledge to develop counseling strategies consistent with the individual values and experiences of their clients.
