There are two themes developed in the text: the first theme is the theme of people’s relations with religion in the context of being responsible for their actions. One of the characters states that she is not sinful enough to see Father Connolly several times during the week. Further in the text, the author illustrates how Father Connolly struggles to maintain the edge between religion and gossip by using other people’s confessions for entertaining purposes.

The second theme is God’s forgiveness and how different people approach the topic. The text emphasizes how Granny had her favorite saints to whom she prayed to be sure of her soul. The author introduces the character and then provides brief details on the character’s approach toward religion to maintain a dynamic sequence of events.
