In James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues, the narration is conducted on behalf of a young man whose brother was arrested for drug use and released from prison. Even though they are brothers, they are still very different. The narrator is an algebra teacher, and he is a good husband and father. Sonny is a wilder, heroin-addicted musician who believes that the darkness can protect him and he is safe in it. Both Sonny and the narrator traveled the world, enlisting in the army, and they both returned to Harlem.

My attitude to drugs is as negative as Sonny’s unnamed brother’s. Probably that is why I like him more. Still, Sonny is not a repulsive hero, despite his mistakes. Through music, Sonny explains everything that lies in his soul to his listeners. In the episode with Sonny playing the piano, readers, along with the narrator, begin to understand that music helps him to clear himself of the past. This is a story not only about the sufferings and joys of life, but it is also a belief in the victory of the human, which is so necessary for black guys like Sonny.
