Read Jamaica Kincaid’s “Lucy.” Describe the relationship between the husband and wife. What do their attitudes tell you about their characters? Is the couple compatible? Is there evidence of gender disparity? If so, in what ways is this manifested?

The relationship between husband and wife illustrates a Western interpretation of gender conduct in the 20th century. Mariah focuses on life’s optimistic and flawless side and draws no attention to hardships. Lewis acts according to his stands, and he is friendly and joyful; however, after a crush on another woman, he becomes rude and manipulative.

Their attitudes prove that Mariah is patient and takes everything for granted, while her husband has distinct values and is stubborn and deceitful. Their couple is not compatible, so their family eventually falls apart. Their relationship correspondingly displays that the man is the person who sets the rules in the house. Lewis wants his wife’s behavior to be within his beliefs, which shows gender disparity directly.
