The US system needs to be corrected before it is too late. The illiberal and autocratic powers are closing in a while, altering the international liberal orders. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is even worsening the situation because it caught America unaware. China and Russia are taking advantage of the situation to offer necessary help to the WHO and some needy countries. The US, alongside European allies, can leverage and combine their economic powers to turn the situation around. No military funding will help the US liberate the international orders again. However, the real comeback will require building systems with liberalism.
The effort to liberate international order will erode political chaos, especially for China. The China system will have to look for ways to deal with the negative energy emitted by the US. The US policymakers will need to clean their system and seek resourceful help from NGOs and other willing institutions. However, for success, all the systems run in the United States must turn to liberal and pursue international liberalism. Cooley and Nexon mention that recovering from illiberalism might be hard because it is not clear how far America is willing to go in losing the hegemony. Although the Trump presidency ended early in 2021, there is no indication that hegemony will be achieved in the country any time soon. The Biden government will work extra hard to build liberal systems which earn the country’s support to rebuild the international liberal order. It will also be hard for the US to make other countries rely on it when they have had new and effective help from China.
