The reading explores changes in black art amidst different social contexts, including the Great Depression, the rise of social activism, and the shift to art depicting common folk. Black art witnessed an increase in the images with the working-class narrative, the representation of the black culture in modernistic and folkloric terms, and works that aspired to expose racial inequality.

I most enjoyed reading the part about black art and protests, specifically, how significant works of art have been introduced amidst the heightened concern for racial justice in the 1950s and afterward. Namely, works such as “O, Mary, Don’t You Weep” by Charles White and “I have A Special Fear For My Loved Ones” by Elizabeth Catlett most vividly exposed racial violence and openly challenged white biased status quo in the 1950s.

From my perspective, art is one of the most important and influential ways to convey the social justice message. It has the unique power to trigger profound emotions in the audience. Hence, I enjoyed reading about major artistic works dedicated to black civil rights and in what context they were produced.

The chapters helped me understand the varieties and ubiquity of black art during different periods and social contexts. Previously I ignored black art as the popular culture has been historically dominated by white art; hence, I was not familiar with various black artistic works. Moreover, I used to assume that black art was homogenous. After reading the material, I understood that black art is, in fact, diverse in themes, styles, and purposes based on the different social and political contexts.
