Read Aristotle’s «Nicomachean Ethics.» What destroys any attempt at virtuous behaviors such as temperance and courage?

Excess temperance or courage and deficiency of one of those destroy any attempt at virtuous behaviors. The absence of the golden middle will lead to excess or deficiency, both of which are undesirable. It is considered foolish to be extra courageous and fears absolutely nothing and faces anything. At the same time, it is pointless to be afraid of everything and sit in one place all the time. In that case, there would be an excess of temperance.

There should always be a golden mean when assessing temperance, courage, or any other virtues. Any virtue in excess or deficiency will destroy virtuous behavior because of the absence of the mean. It is crucial for the mean to be assessed by considering the personal characteristics of the human.
