Read and respond to “The eugenics crusade: What’s wrong with perfect?”

The article “The eugenics crusade: What’s wrong with perfect?” concentrates on revealing how the eugenics crusade, through its goal to maintain perfectness acted as an influential tool of social control. The eugenics movement ended up eliminating social ills in the community, particularly in physically and mentally challenged individuals, the needy, and immigrants, as they were considered unfit.

The sterilization strategy utilized by the eugenics crusade eradicated the feebleminded individuals to refine society’s intelligence levels. I, therefore, believe that the eugenics movement acted as a scientific answer to social issues by maintaining a healthy population to create a stronger society.

Based on the article, it is true that the findings are that human traits are capable of being passed down from one generation to another in a predictable manner. However, the proposed idea to control reproduction to refine American society led to the emergence of eugenics, which yielded unending racism. The decision to preserve only healthy babies while eradicating unfit babies to overcome most social problems in society, like supporting the poor, anti-social behavior, and mental issues, expanded discrimination in society.

Conversely, the movement led to the creation of laws that controlled immigration and generated institutional reforms by hiring quality workers. From a critical perspective, the eugenics crusade eliminated and discriminated against feebleminded individuals instead of providing them with the right support to improve their capabilities and traits. The key issue that needs to be added to the work is finding how individuals that do not meet the anticipated intelligence levels are supported instead of eradicated them.
