The key example of gendered exclusion in sport is Amy Morris Homans’s case, who started out as a physical educator. It is stated that “sports such as bicycling, golf, and tennis might inculcate in young ladies undesirable manly characteristics such as aggressiveness and confidence.” In other words, there were points of exclusion against women due to these sports seeking traditionally masculine traits, which has no practical basis since it is a person’s physical conditioning and fitness that dictate an athlete’s performance.
The example of Bob Farrell and Harold S. Browning is demonstrative of social class exclusion since both had similar goals, but Bob’s lower social status was a contributing factor to his exclusion and subsequent failure. It is important to note that one’s social status determines whether or not a person is privileged with certain opportunities or resources, which is highly impactful on one’s future. It is stated that “Bob Farrell and Harold Browning live very different lives as the result of privilege that resulted from nothing Harold did nor Bob failed to do.” The example demonstrates that both individuals had equivalent ambitions and capabilities, but the socioeconomic status of each individual, such as family wealth, parents’ occupations, and wealth, gradually affected the freedom of both Bob and Harold.
The example of racial exclusion is elaborated by Marianne Adams, who stated that “‘differences’ in that they are understood to differ from some larger societal norm that may be taken for granted by the majority group, and which is, therefore, socially privileged.” In other words, an exclusion motivated by racial agendas can be unnoticed by the ones who oppress since it is either normalized or perceived as a commonality, whereas minority groups or the oppressed experience them directly and explicitly.
