Speaking

The death of George Floyd could be considered an example of miscommunication. Local Law Enforcement was alerted about the person attempting to use falsified documents at a convenience shop. WCCO questioned the store owner, who had made the call, what had transpired and what had been said over the phone. Mr. Floyd was told to exit his vehicle by police officers. He was handcuffed and brutally apprehended on the road. According to the statement of police spokesman John Elder, he physically resisted cooperating with the officers. After experiencing medical issues of such apprehension, Mr. Floyd passed away at the hospital.

Miscommunication involved three parties the store manager, police officers, and Mr. Floyd.

The manager refused to report his perspective of the events, but the contents of his dialogue with the 911 agency revealed that the call was extremely short and lacked the necessary context for such brutal apprehension. The guilty policemen demonstrated an unforgivable lack of communication by not allowing Mr. Floyd to properly articulate the situation. Finally, Mr. Floyd, who may or may not have been in the wrong, should have followed the officers’ orders.

Listening

On New Year’s Eve of 2016 depicts similarly unfortunate miscommunication with law enforcement occurred. Las Vegas police received a call from US marshals requesting assistance in apprehending an armed fugitive. Keith Childress, a 23-year-old father of two, was shot five times by police. Later it was discovered that Childress was not sought for attempted murder and had been carrying a smartphone rather than a weapon. The policemen who arrived at the scene responded based on the unconfirmed information. They did not make an attempt to oversee the situation critically. An innocent man was killed that night as a result of their catastrophic miscommunication.

These disclosures have sparked questions about communications and decision-making inside the police department, which has previously been chastised for its use of lethal force.

Even though they had limited information and clearly required more details, they acted without questioning the US Marshals.
