Provide a full description of Freud’s Theory of the ID, EGO and SUPER-EGO. Describe the role of each of the three components and the significance of their interactions.

Freud developed a theory of personality and established that each person has three parts: EGO, SUPER-EGO, and ID.

The interaction of these parts allows a person to behave in complex ways and to transform his actions based on which part of the personality predominates. Freud believed that the balance of all three components becomes the key to healthy behavior devoid of anxiety and negative energy.

The ID is the primitive part of the personality responsible for instinctive behavior. The ID manifests physiological and psychological patterns that are impulsive and unconscious.

The EGO becomes a natural extension of the ID because it is formed under the influence of external conditions. The environment forces the ID to change under new norms and behavioral habits. The EGO is directed at making decisions and determining conscious actions.

The SUPER-EGO arises only from the external environment and creates impulses to control the ID and EGO. SUPER-EGO conditions the conformity of the ID to social norms and habits. SUPER-EGO’s role in EGO is to guide it in a perfect direction.
