In “A Glossary of Haunting,” Tuck and Ree provide a unique analysis of how horror and haunting may serve as a mediator of people’s change. For instance, the authors examine the story of Beloved and her family in the novel written by Toni Morrison. Beloved, in this case, represents the psychological trauma that former slaves experience. Indeed, when the ghost (Beloved) has sex with the stepfather, the latter remembers the instances of sexual abuse that he was the victim of in the past.
Other family members have similar experiences of encountering their past that they tried to suppress due to Beloved’s presence. In this regard, in my opinion, the authors argue that in order to continue healthy and happy life, one should seek to embrace their past trauma, not avoid it. However, I would like to know in more detail what techniques one can use in order to adequately resolve past issues.
