Present a situation in which you acted or reacted ‘mindlessly,’ rather than thoughtfully, and which did not turn out well for you. Using the critical thinking concepts, which specific, more effective thinking strategies could you have utilized in that situation and what might have been a more positive outcome? The thinking strategies you discuss must be research-related, not personal opinions.

Everyone experienced some situations in life when he or she acted mindlessly and afterward, could not even find an explanation for such actions. The main reasoning came from being lost or shocked, not being able to think rationally, etc. However, acting mindlessly also has a sound psychological basis by which it is possible to explain certain actions.

Thinking strategies have a logical structure and may flow normally, without any distraction and malfunctions. However, all people are subject to some weaknesses, so-called biases, which sometimes prevent us from thinking rationally. If we take an example of a housewife buying one and the same product many times even after hearing that there is a better product of the same category, we may say that she neglects all results of experiments because she is firm about her choice no matter what. This bias is called confirmation bias – “people who found the correct rule earliest had generated more negative instances, which provided the information they could use to modify their hypothesis.

John Barham gives a clue to understanding where we should take information from in order to have a chance to judge things objectively:

Cost-benefit analysis, risk management, and related disciplines that rely on statistics, economics, the law, and psychology allow us to weigh choices rationally and increase the odds of making wise choices.

Thus, in the described case it is better to choose the thinking strategy of comparison – it will help independently assess all advantages and disadvantages of a certain thing, event, or action and make a more grounded decision on what to choose and how to act.
