Is the abstract clear and informative? What is the purpose of the study? What was the research method used for this study? Describe this method briefly. Briefly describe the results of the study. Are the results useful? Why or why not? What are the strengths and limitations of this study? Dr. Swanson describes the caring processes (below). Give an example from your nursing career of each of the five processes: Knowing, Being with, Doing for, Enabling, and Maintaining belief.

The abstract provided is concise and contains a study of the middle-range theory of caring. The study is based on the phenomenological method that is concerned with investigating the circumstances that have affected an individual. This method emphasizes nuances and recognizes phenomena as viewed by a person in a certain setting. The five care processes were described, as well as an objective summary of care.

Furthermore, the research results were compared to Cobb’s concept of social support, Watson’s caring elements, and Benner’s characterization of the nurse’s assisting function. The results were helpful since they were based not only on the descriptions, but comparisons with other theories, and the findings were corroborated by experiences.

Among the study’s strengths is the reliability of the research due to its implementation of relatable literature. Among the weaknesses of the study is the few participants, which lowers the level of the results’ versatility and quality.

Knowing is seeking to comprehend an occurrence as it pertains to someone else’s life. For example, I tried to understand and support a sick patient position, who decided not to terminate the pregnancy for the child’s sake even though they had a chance of survival.

Being with implies being with the patient who needs someone’s presence owing to difficulties or worries. In my case, I stayed with a patient who underwent surgery and needed constant check-ups. Doing for includes doing for the other person what they would do for themselves if it were feasible. In my case, I assisted a patient who was unable to move to eat.

The goal of enabling is to make it easier for others to develop, recover, or exercise self-care. Enabling entails providing knowledge and clarifications, as well as emotional assistance in the form of tolerating and embracing the other person’s sentiments. For example, I told a patient who was recently diagnosed with diabetes what the possible replacements for his favorite food could be.

The last caring component, maintaining belief, is keeping trust in the ability of others to go through an incident or change and confront a meaningful future. For instance, believing that a patient who was in an accident and was paralyzed to be able to relearn how to walk.
