People’s ability to avoid and resolve cognitive dissonance confers on that individual a variety of benefits. However, these individual benefits may pose collective risks in terms of perpetuating the harmful status quo (think Prisoner’s Dilemma). Think of an example and explain how individuals’ cognitive dissonance reduction may be contributing to this ill of society.

The theory of cognitive dissonance asserts that out of the possible ways of interpreting and evaluating the same situation (objects) and their behavior in it, a person chooses those that cause less anxiety and remorse. That means that by reducing the dissonance, an individual tends to choose the strategy that is easier to justify. For instance, if a client has a choice to give a professional an envelope, either full of money or an empty one – he or she is likely to give a full one because giving an empty envelope will become a fraud that is more difficult to justify for oneself as an appropriate decision.
