The concept of health has a very complex nature. On the one hand, the line between being healthy and being sick is rather evident. On the other hand, the unique characteristics of patients and specific health needs make the notion of health extraordinarily multi-faceted. At present, it is assumed that health has to be defined based on patient-specific needs and, therefore, is unique for every person. However, general tendencies can be identified in each definition.

For example, the concept of health may vary depending on a person’s age. In this case, health is viewed as the ability of a patient’s body systems to control key processes, function properly, and fight external threats. Therefore, the definition implies a focus on sustaining the patient’s key systems.

Viewing health from the perspective of patients with disabilities, one may define the subject matter as the severity of the condition and the extent to which it restricts their ability to function. Therefore, the improvement in the extent to which a disabled person can perform specific physical or mental activities can be regarded as massive progress.

Therefore, patients’ goals define the definition of health to a considerable extent. The range of their emotional, physical and mental abilities determines the definition of health and allows controlling the factors that contribute to a change in their health status. Being extremely multifaceted and depending on people’s unique characteristics, health has a wide range of definitions.
