Overview of the constructivist theories. Suggest the ideas considered best for the criteria above.

A

The theories of learning that support the education system and other fields like psychology and cognitive science have propagated for many years. New instructive methodologies based on these theoretical models are causing a gradual shift from passive instructional methods, which demands little of the students’ participation. Of all the constructivists’ theories outlined, such as Dewey’s, Piaget’s, Vygotsky’s, Bruner’s, and Gardner’s, it appears like Bruner’s and Jean Piaget’s theoretical models offer stronger support for the constructivist theory.

Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development has significantly enriched human understanding, especially regarding the development in children. Jean explains that the initial years of life are a period of speedy growth in a child’s ability to reason and to understand the environment. As the child grows, he becomes the initiator and experimenter, thereby causing cognitive development as he interacts with the environment. Jean’s notion and expression of egocentrism, as well as his emphasis on role-taking, presents a motivating, testable developmental connotation which are significant attributes of a good educational theory.

Bruner’s cognitive theory stresses the role of humans in acquiring and processing information and how people understand, process, store, retrieve and apply information based on the acquired knowledge. The theory emphasizes the use of knowledge obtained previously and its application in solving present problems by means of analysis, interpretation, valuation, and synthesis. The theory views learning as a developmental process that occurs in stages, and therefore it is considered predictive and testable.
