One of the critically important provisions of No Child Left Behind legislation is the requirement related to Adequate Yearly Progress. Why do some advocates for English language learners believe that this particular provision created disastrous consequences for schools with large numbers of ELLs?

A learner-friendly culture does not include a friendly student-teacher relationship only. It also includes a ‘relationship’ between the student and his educational books. A student who can read a book and not understand its content cannot have a learner-friendly culture. In such a case, the teacher should step in and take control of the situation. Most students lack understanding because they perceive the content to be very complicated and difficult. A teacher should be able to simplify the contents of a book and by doing so; the student will be more inclined to want to read the book.

Moreover, the teacher should be well prepared to answer a student’s question without hesitation or the provision of a wrong answer as this creates confusion within the students. The teacher should answer the question very calmly and comprehensively so as not to discourage the students from asking questions in the future. Also, the teacher should be prepared for the lesson in advance. Proper research should be done to offer more information and in preparation for potential questions. This can be achieved if the teacher does prior readings and research before the lesson.

Where the teacher cannot answer a question, she should request time to do more research and get back to the student. If not, the teacher can refer the student to another teacher who is more conversant with the section the question was generated from.
