The norm that greatly influenced me both in my childhood and adulthood is the strict necessity to answer my relatives’ calls immediately, even if it is not very convenient at a particular moment. This norm taught me to be respectable to all my family members and let me understand that in response to my decent behavior, my relatives will assuredly answer my calls whenever I need them. This rule of my childhood had a long-term influence on me, as it taught me to be accountable for those I think I can rely upon.
Noticing and adopting norms is important for identity formation but is also the root of conformity, obedience, and social learning. Describe one “norm” that you learned at an early age (i.e., based on your upbringing – family, town, church) that you now realize to be relatively unique to that particular subculture. How did it shape your identity in the short and long term?
