Capital punishment, or the death penalty, is the sanction where the state kills an individual for a crime committed. Religious and human rights activists worldwide rose against the punishment, and many democratic nations in the world abolished the practice. The 2005 Simmons decision forbids the death penalty on people who committed the crime before the age of 18.

Despite the decision, the US government continued to execute older offenders. It pardoned younger offenders and gave them a chance to be better citizens. The continuation of the death penalty is motivated by the moral duty of the state to protect its citizens from criminals who intend to jeopardize the nation’s safety. If other nations had the crime rate as the USA, the citizens would support capital punishment. However, the severity and intent of the crime must be considered before sentencing a person.
