Heterologous fertilization is any procedure intended to establish conception by using gametes from at least one donor other than the spouse. It is banned because it violates the covenant of marriage, the unity of the spouses, and the dignity due to parents and children.

Homologous artificial fertilization is any procedure used to create pregnancy utilizing sperm from a homologous donor. When it separates the gametes of the two spouses who have united in marriage, it is banned. Reproduction is a unitive significance of the marital act, for example, any tactic utilized to obtain extracorporeal conception.

Participation in contracts or agreements for surrogate motherhood is not authorized due to the dignity of the child and marriage, as well as the uniqueness of the mother-child bond. Furthermore, the commercialization of such surrogacy diminishes the dignity of women, particularly the impoverished. In the event of an extrauterine pregnancy, no action that constitutes a direct abortion is ethically permissible.

The health institutes under the Catholic Church may not advocate or condone contraceptive procedures, but they must give education to married couples and the medical personnel who counsel them on the Church’s teaching on responsible parenthood as well as natural family planning options.

In a Catholic healthcare institution, direct sterilization of either men or women, whether permanent or temporary, is not authorized. Procedures that cause sterility are approved when their immediate consequence is the cure or relief of current and serious disease, and a less invasive treatment is not viable.
