For this assignment, I have examined the clothes and other items I had around the house more closely. As part of my inspection, I have noted their countries of origin. After a brief period of walking around the house and checking, the results are as follows:

  1. An Apple tablet manufactured in Thailand.
  2. A slow cooker made in Indonesia.
  3. A simple cotton shirt made in India.
  4. A watch made in Germany.
  5. Taiwanese jacket.
  6. A set of headbands made in Singapore.
  7. A set of Russian stacking dolls.
  8. A pair of jeans made in South Korea.
  9. A Portuguese chocolate bar.
  10. Finnish mint candy.
  11. A can of US meat preserves.
  12. Green Tea gathered in Japan.
  13. IKEA Cupboard made in Sweden.
  14. UK-produced CD record.
  15. Dried spices from Mexico.
  16. Spanish spice set.
  17. Canadian maple syrup.
  18. Georgian wine set.
  19. Bag of candy from the Czech Republic.
  20. A TV made in China.

For many of these examples, the countries that manufactured the goods specialize in a certain type of production. For example, Canada and Mexico are known for their maple syrup and spices accordingly (Maple Syrup Global Production and Top Producing Countries – Tridge, 2020; Mexico | Imports and Exports | World | Ginger, Saffron, Turmeric, Thyme, Bay Leaves, Curry, Other Spices | Value (US$) and Value Growth, YoY (%) | 2009 – 2020, 2021).

Thailand has a considerably large tech market, contributing to outsourcing from many international companies. China, similarly, makes TVs and other types of consumer goods for customers all around the world. Looking at all the different products I have in my house taught me an important lesson about global production.

In particular, it became apparent to me that regardless of a company’s main location, it is likely to outsource its production to other nations for better profits. Additionally, it highlighted the fact that some nations are better suited for certain types of manufacturing than others.
